Youth Empowerment Project
Did you know that more than half of local teens said that they, or someone they know, have been involved in a violent dating relationship?

Dating violence is a repeated pattern of violent or abusive behavior by one partner in a dating relationship toward the other. Teens may experience violent or abusive behavior from their boyfriend or girlfriend, or someone they are hanging out with. Either way, behavior including physical, emotional, verbal and/or sexual abuse is never okay.

What are these types of abuse and what do they look like? Physical abuse is used to gain or maintain control of another. This may include pulling hair, pinching, slapping, punching, pushing and choking. Emotional abuse is using words to minimize another’s feelings by actions such as playing mind games or spreading rumors. Verbal abuse is using words to intentionally hurt, frighten, or threaten another. This may include using put-downs and name calling. Emotional and/or verbal abuse is typically the first stage of a violent relationship that can lead to physical abuse. Sexual abuse is forcing any unwanted sexual acts or behavior onto another. This may include threatening physical harm if another doesn’t agree to sex, and using drugs or alcohol to impair another’s judgment.

The Maricopa Association of Governments created the Youth Empowerment Project with support from the Governor’s Office for Children, Youth & Families, Division for Women to address teen dating violence. Teens told MAG that they would turn to their friends when in a difficult dating relationship and that they would seek online resources. The Youth Empowerment Project was created as an intervention tool to engage teens in becoming the solution. The project raises awareness of the availability of resources for teens through the development of a Web site and public service announcement competition.

The Web site at www.WebofFriends.org includes information on how to get help, fact sheets about what happens when violence is reported to the police, and teens sharing their stories about successfully leaving violent dating relationships. The site provides teens with valuable information about how to access services alone or with the help of an adult, and how to support friends in a violent dating relationship.

The Public Service Announcement Competition invites teens to partner with MAG in creating messages speaking to their peers about dating violence. The competition has resulted in a video and radio ad, which is available on the Web site. This year’s competition will include categories in print and web banner design. The competition will open in September 2008. The winning entry in the print category will be professionally produced and distributed to print media outlets throughout the region! Competition materials will be available online at www.WebofFriends.org.

For more information about the Youth Empowerment Project, please contact Renae Tenney at the MAG office by calling (602) 254-6300 or by email at rtenney@mag.maricopa.gov.

Carla Sanchez Memorial Fund
Tuesday, March 25th Carla Sanchez, one of my best friends, was tragically murdered at 5:45am. She was parked in front of a friend’s house early that morning to take him to work when suddenly a black vehicle drove up next to her and shot and killed her. At this point no one has been identified as the killer. I, myself, was very close to her. We met our freshman year in high school and remained close since then. Carla was a mother of two very beautiful kids. Her son Carlos and her daughter Cassandra meant the world to her. Carlos will be turning two years old on April 6th and Cassandra (her little Princess as she called her) is 8 months old. Carla was a very hard working mother and a very trustworthy friend.
During this very difficult, very emotional time I would like to ask that if anyone is able to contribute any amount to help her family for funeral expenses and expenses for the children, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Vanessa Lopez

I love and miss her very much and although I won’t EVER understand why this has happened I will do anything I can to ease the pain for her family and keep her memory alive.

The Carla Sanchez Memorial Fund has been set up through Bank of America. Donations can be deposited at ANY Bank of America location under her name. Again, thank you!
